
The Cognitive Exodus
A very recent conversation I had about artificial intelligence didn’t focus on the typical killer robots or runaway super-intelligence. Instead, this conversation focused on quieter and more immediate issues. Specifically, the conversation focused at how automation can change human behavior long before it replaces human capabilities.
AI as it stands today is a blend of opportunity and risk. On one hand, AI promises enormous benefits for individuals and society through better tools, smarter systems, and automation, reducing repetitive or exhausting work. On the other hand, it highlights weaknesses in human decision-making, incentive management, and technology governance. In reality, the problem isn’t machines going rogue; it’s people deploying technology without fully considering consequences. This is the old saying of “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”
A key concern for us all is how quickly society struggles to adapt to rapid technological change. Five years ago, conversational AI felt like science fiction. Today it’s normal to interact with it in real time. People use it to replace relationships, have therapy sessions or just to talk to someone. This type of change arrives quietly, then suddenly becomes indispensable. People will suffer very real stress and anxiety when they lose contact with their AI based relationship.
The deeper issue at play here isn’t just technical disruption that occurs but the cognitive adaptation. We humans will very quickly adjust to convenience. Consider the act of navigation. After years of relying on electronic maps, using paper maps feels difficult. Navigating from memory also becomes challenging. Not using the electronic crutch challenges us. Drivers accustomed to advanced driver assistance systems such as FSD often need time measured in days to weeks to readjust when returning to fully manual driving. Skills don’t disappear, but the reliance shifts effort away from them and the skills will languish. I recently watched a young person struggle with using a paper map versus their smartphone. It was both scary and amusing. They literally didn’t know how to read a paper map and map out a route. By the same token, I have used electronic mapping software that refused to understand I wanted to make a stop in a very specific place that was somewhat off my “optimal” route. The software kept trying to tell me it knew better than I did what I wanted to do. I knew that stop had better restrooms and the software did not. I had history and perspective that it didn’t have and probably would never have. But, someone who just accepted what the software said as gospel would have just “gone with the flow”.
AI will extend this shift further. When smart systems summarize information, draft messages, and guide decisions, people are at risk becoming passive consumers of answers instead of active thinkers. Critical thinking isn’t eliminated, but it can weaken if unused just like other skills.
At the same time, AI is likely to benefit those who already think critically, using it to amplify their abilities. Others may lean on it to avoid effort altogether, widening existing gaps in understanding and engagement.
Social media has already demonstrated how technology can amplify localized tendencies. Confirmation bias and groupthink existed long before our digital platforms, but modern networks amplify and normalize them. AI will accelerate similar patterns if people accept outputs without questioning them.
The future likely won’t look like science fiction. Instead, automation will slip into everyday tools, gradually changing expectations of effort and competence. The real challenge won’t be whether AI replaces humans, but whether humans are willing to maintain the skills and judgment needed when automation fails.
Technology rarely removes human responsibility. It just changes where responsibility lives.
The question isn’t whether AI will think for us. It’s whether we’ll still choose to think for ourselves.
